The Wates Group is one of the UK’s largest family owned construction companies with over 2,000 employees and 16 offices throughout the UK. In 2010 Wates Construction was one of the first main contractors to develop its BIM tools and systems, following the Government’s announcement of the 2016 BIM mandate for publicly funded projects.
Implementing BIM required fundamental changes to Wates Constructions’ systems and requires on-going staff training to ensure everyone (employees and the supply chain) understands the BIM concept and the processes. To facilitate this Wates Construction approached us and BIM elearning® to provide the required BIM online training content for their Learning Management System in a SCORM format.
In 2014 Wates chose two BIM elearning® courses, BIM Awareness and a Typical BIM Project Lifecycle, which were adapted for Wates specific systems, terminology and branding and to tie it in with all the company’s staff training.
“We required staff training to help develop and promote Wates Construction as a BIM savvy business. The structure of the courses and the staff management system enabled us provide tangible proof of our BIM Level 2 training strategy for PAS 91 and publicly funded projects.
“We were also able to obtain part funding from the Government’s Skills Funding Agency through their programme to incentivise Tier 1 contractors to up-skill their supply chain in BIM through collaborative training programmes.”
