University Arms Hotel, Cambridge

URS Corporation was appointed as the mechanical, electrical and public health (MEP) designer for the comprehensive renovation of the University Arms Hotel in Cambridge in late 2013. The proposal created by architect John Simpson was to transform the hotel’s disparate buildings into a cohesively designed, landmark hotel. URS appointed our team to deliver the Stage D and subsequently Stage E design models in summer 2014.

Our approach
The MEP model was built from traditionally authored 2D design drawings, red line mark ups and sketched details. The information was authored in Revit and cached in Navisworks for review by internal and client team members. We highlighted potential issues within the model with the use of clash detection reports.

URS designers were able to then quickly pinpoint the problem area, consider a solution and communicate the changes back to us for remodelling. As the project developed the Stage D information was migrated to a more detailed Stage E format.

The outcome
The detailed 3D model provided the design team with an insight into the engineering issues that could not have been achieved in a 2D working environment. This included the impact of service sizes and routes together with the knowledge gained from being able to navigate the 3D environment.

The project also provided the URS team with an introduction to the delivery of a complete 3D MEP model in a Revit environment within a tight timeframe. When the Stage E model and our commission were complete, URS took over further development of the model towards Stage F and the final drawing production.
