The NHS Trust in Walsall planned to upgrade its existing hospital to include a state-of-the-art Diagnostic and Treatment Centre consisting of 558 patient beds, a new Women, Children and Young Peoples Centre as part of the existing Maternity Unit, and an education centre with up-to-date facilities. This type of extensive restructuring and development needed a thoroughly detailed plan based on an accurate timeline to ensure an efficient project. Fulcro was brought in by contractors Skanska to aid with this process.
Fulcro worked as part of an integrated team with Skanska and was in charge of the complete design and modelling of the hospital. This included the creation of 3D and 4D models that enabled the visualisation of the project so that errors in the original plan were eliminated. Fulcro collaborated with all members of the design, installation, mechanical and engineering teams to develop a strategy that reduced lead times, site rework and filed engineering times. A detailed services distribution philosophy was also developed, which allowed for large service installations to be prefabricated from Fulcro’s 3D engineering model off site, saving time and reducing costs.
