Birmingham New Street is the busiest station outside of London and the busiest interchange station in the UK. Before the New Street Station Gateway Plus redevelopment, it was dark, unwelcoming and overcrowded with poor access for passengers. The old Palisades shopping centre adjoined to the station needed a complete facelift.
Fulcro provided detailed 4D planning, including the creation of BIM models to represent detailed existing structure, proposed structure and corresponding extensive temporary works. This was an extremely complex project requiring multiple work faces across many levels, while maintaining full operation of a live railway station. 4D planning was critical to the success of safe, expedient works across many levels ensuring that public, construction and rail interfaces were maintained without disruption.
In September 2015, Birmingham New Street Station and Grand Central shopping centre opened its doors to the public and has become a world class transport, shopping and community hub in the heart of Britain’s second city, servicing 170,000 passengers every day.
The new improved precinct is known as Grand Central Birmingham and has 18,600 square metres of retail space for over 40 premium fashion and lifestyle shops and more than 20 cafes and restaurants.
